(Global Warming News) Bush Administration Pushes Climate Change Action into the Future - Scientific American

President Bush this week called on the world’s top emitters of greenhouse gases warming the world to set a "long-term goal" for reducing such pollution, but was vague on how to complete the task. Bush proposed that a conference be held by the summer to formally establish such a goal and pave the way for a "global consensus at the U. Strategies to meet the goal would vary by country and largely rely on advanced technology such as capturing the carbon dioxide spewed by coal-burning power plants; the Bush vision also foresees gasoline alternatives, nuclear power and an international clean technology fund to promote research into carbon-free energy sources. Doniger notes that Bush has refused to sign on to a plan that calls for a 50 percent cut in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by 2050 or to an effort to hold average temperatures from rising by more than 2 degrees Celsius (3. read more

Topic: Global Warming News - Europeans angry after Bush climate speech 'charade' - Guardian Unlimited

George Bush was castigated by European diplomats and found himself isolated yesterday after a special conference on climate change ended without any progress. European ministers, diplomats and officials attending the Washington conference were scathing, particularly in private, over Mr Bush’s failure once again to commit to binding action on climate change. A senior European diplomat attending the conference, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting confirmed European suspicions that it had been intended by Mr Bush as a spoiler for a major UN conference on climate change in Bali in December. In contrast with the early years of his presidency when he expressed scepticism about climate change and whether humans were responsible, Mr Bush acknowledged yesterday “energy security and climate change are two of the great challenges of our time. The US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, yesterday defended President George Bush’s climate change conference in Washington against accusations that it was a spoiler intended to undermine UN efforts to secure a global compromise. read more

US urges climate change consensus - BBC News- About: Global Warming News

Ms Rice said the US supported the goals of the United Nations US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said climate change is a real problem, and world leaders should forge a new global consensus on tackling it. President George W Bush, who shortly after taking office in 2001 said he would not submit the Kyoto Protocol to Congress for ratification, has opposed mandatory cuts. She challenged leaders to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels by moving toward energy sources that would reduce global warming - but without harming their economies. Activists want the US to take the lead in solving the climate crisis However, our correspondent says they hope that perhaps some small practical steps may emerge to help share best practice between industrial sectors and they are relieved that publicly, at last, America is saying that climate change is really a problem that needs tackling. read more

(Global Warming News) Africa: Leaders Must Unite to Fight Global Warming - AllAfrica.com

All countries can mention theirs as an example from Kenya's erratic rainfall pattern that farmers dread, annual monsoon rains that come with unprecedented destruction across Asia, increasingly destructive hurricanes and typhoons sweeping through the Atlantic and Caribbean and melting polar ice caps threatening to inundate many coastal cities. But the message is that the major polluters must take responsibility by making major political commitments to seeking a global solution to the problem. The message that the delegations to the Washington gathering this week must ingest is that, fighting abject poverty in the South and cleaning the actions that is inevitable from runaway industrial growth in the 'major economies' in the North is key to addressing global warming and ensuring the survival of humanity. Topic: Global Warming News - Motives behind Bush's climate summit - BBC News

Critics say Mr Bush is trying to outmanoeuvre the UN climate talks Delegates from the world’s top 16 polluting nations are in Washington for a controversial climate change meeting, organised by President Bush. The meeting has been officially welcomed by EU officials, but some privately fear that President Bush may be trying to undermine UN negotiations on the issue by striking a weak deal with the Chinese, under which both sides agree targets that are voluntary, not binding. The Democrat leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate both wrote to Mr Bush this week asking him to agree mandatory carbon dioxide (CO2) targets, and to arrange a cap-and-trade system for American industry, like the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). He first mooted this conference just before the G8 meeting in the summer when he was under intense pressure to sign up to mandatory emissions targets. Climate analyst Phil Clapp, of the National Environmental Trust, said he believed the meeting had originally been devised to get Mr Bush off the hook at the G8 summit, but had turned into a PR exercise. He said that holding a meeting excluding poor countries that would be most affected by a warming world was like a slave traders’ meeting called to discuss the abolition of slavery. read more

Solon Calls For Tax Incentives For Hybrid Cars - AHN

Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Ilocos Sur Rep. Singson has filed a bill seeking to grant tax incentives to importers and manufacturers of fuel-saving hybrid cars to make it more affordable and available to Filipinos. Singson said automotive companies in the country are considering the importation and manufacture of hybrid cars, but “hybrid cars cost $5,000 more than a normal vehicle. According to Singson, duty-free and tax free importation of parts will make hybrid car assembly competitive with the production of normal gas fuel cars. Singson also proposed in the bill that an Inter-Agency Council conduct a 5-year periodic review of the tax incentives grants. Copyright © AHN Media Corp - All rights reserved. read more
