Santa to generate 0.75 million tonnes of extra waste (26/11/2007) - MoreThanWaste- Recycle

One way in which we can all make a difference this Christmas is by recycling and the good news is that nine out of ten homes now have a doorstep recycling service for a range of materials including paper, card, glass, metal cans. Throughout the year as well as Christmas, glass bottles and jars, newspapers, magazines, cardboard packaging and metal drink and food cans, can be recycled through existing kerbside collection schemes and local recycling points. Recycle Now has also teamed up with the Woodland Trust Christmas Card Recycling Scheme to enable people to recycle their cards throughout January at participating Tesco (excludes Express), mainland WHSmith high street stores (except Worcester), TKMaxx or Marks & Spencer stores throughout January. Launched by Matthew Pinsent in September 2004, Recycle Now is the multi-media national recycling campaign, implemented and managed by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) on behalf of the Government. read more

Why do you think the sacrifices we'll have to make to reverse climate change are not worth the benefits?

Whenever I ask any question on the subject of Climate Change on here, every single time the vast majority of answerers write about how bad it will be if/when governments attempt to implement measures to reverse anthropogenic global warming (AGW), and the greater climate crisis that includes AGW.

all talk about higher taxes, higher interest rates, more control and enforcement by government to limit your freedoms, massive pay cuts and lay offs across the board, higher unemployment rates, more people living at or below the poverty line, and any of 1000 other fears related to your suspicion that acting in an environmentally responsible manner is too hard, too burdensome, or unneccesary.

do none of ya'll, not a single person who has answered any of my climate change questions, consider or think about the great benefits and improvements to our lives, lifestyles, way of living, interacting, communicating, helping, and loving each other that will come from a change in thinking? Hello Vlad: I agree it is not convenient for people who currently profit from the utilisation (burning or killing) of natural resources (trees, coal, oil), including people who drive motor vehicles, and that's the point.

inconvenience will increase until it is more convenient to convert to renewable energy, and reducing, reusing, recycling, and repairing the things we have now.

Dave: It's easy for your mind to skip from denial to despair without stopping in the middle part where we actually do something about this crisis.

wasn't a question, because I've come back from despair myself so I know what it's like.

Linlyons: I agree with all of that, but there is still hope. We have a chance to set things right. We need only try.

Amiram a: Global warming is anthropogenic enough for this to be a crisis, and it can be solved. It doesn't matter if solar output is increasing, or whatever, because our impact is significant and preventable.

ideas on what changes need to be made to our way of living are true, yet incomplete.

you have ommitted the most significant driver of this issue: the population explosion in the poorer countries.

has to deal with this issue: every man, woman and child on Earth must contribute to this cooperative venture in order for us to be successful. No exceptions! Poorer countries use less energy per person, and their total output of greenhouse gasses are significantly less than western countries, but they must learn to control their population. As their standard of living improves with the implementation of renewable energy infrastructure, their emmission will also fall, but the western world must embrace it first, on a mass scale, for this to work.

again Homesteader: at the end of your answer, you say you hope we can rise to this challenge and make the world better.

does better mean to you? Because it certainly won't be convenient to live like that, which seems to be what most answerers on here want: Their consumerist, wasteful, convenient, “instant gratification” lifestyle.

everything we buy is on credit, because it's too hard to wait for something wanted now. We westerners have become a complacent, immature, childish people, and perhaps some (limited) government enforced discipline on environmental resposibility is not a bad idea: don't throw garbage on the street, smoking kills, drink drive and your a bloody idiot, red meat consumption leads to heart disease, etc, etc.

biggest obstacle to having a green world is that corporations are required by law to pathologically persue profit and power at any cost. We must reshape law to make raw living nature more valuable than dead extracted natural resources.

japanese genius idea number 235463423: recycle cell phones into … - SlashGear

So the engineers at Hokuto System are the ones behind this, but basically they are recycling cell phone components and using a custom made board to make pocket sized computers. It looks like they are stealing the screen, RAM/ROM chips, processor, audio chips and interfaces, and CMOS sensors from the phones and putting them on a chip board. The program appears to be called DVIEW and will begin selling these micro computers before the end of the year. There are so many business uses for this type of device its not funny, those engineers really are geniusā if this works out on the business end of things. read more

Global Warming: Income from cers must not be taxed - Economic Times- Topic: Global Warming News

Business world today is abuzz with terms such as carbon credits, Kyoto Protocol, CERs, CDM Mechanism, etc. To begin with, all these terms are related to global warming caused by emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and the various frameworks being put in place to counter the impact. In pursuance of UNFCCC, the Kyoto protocol was signed to bind developed countries to reduce their GHG emission level by 5. India is signatory to the Kyoto Protocol as Annex 2 country, without any obligation to reduce emission. These credits are popularly known as ācarbon creditsā and technically Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) and quantified as equivalent to one metric tonne of CO2 reductions. Countries like India and China are capitalising on huge market for CERs as they are not under any obligation to reduce the emission level and are in a rapid industrialisation phase. read more

Which is more economical per mile long term? The prius hybrid or the yaris?

The prius is about $10,000 more, and is better on gas milage. Is it really worth it as an investment to spend more and buy the prius, or go with a less expensive car and buy the yaris. Environmentally, I know the hybrid is better. I'm trying to figure out which one is less expensive to operate over a long term period.

Renewable Energy Association completes stage one of OFT consumer … - eGov monitor

The Renewable Energy Association (REA) has successfully completed the first stage of the OFT’s Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS) for its REAL Assurance Scheme. The code will cover activities in the sale, installation and servicing of micro-renewable energy products such as solar panelling, micro-wind turbines, ground source heat pumps and wood stove burners usually sold for the home. By completing Stage One, the REA has satisfied the OFT that its consumer code of practice promotes and safeguards consumer interests beyond the minimum requirements of consumer law. In doing so the REA will undertake comprehensive monitoring procedures including independent audits, mystery shopping exercises and consumer satisfaction surveys. Only codes that demonstrate that they are effective in promoting consumer interests are entitled to display the OFT Approved Code logo and official promotion. Consumers who buy goods or services from a business with an OFT approved Code can expect a much higher standard of protection than that required by law. read more
