John Dingell, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, will likely push through a new global warming bill this spring, presenting the administration with a new battle over the environment and energy policy. The top House leadership sources, who refused to provide details of what’s being considered, hinted that it would likely be tied to energy legislation that promotes clean coal usage and nuclear fuel. Global warming melts away hurricanes - study - Jamaica Gleaner(Global Warming News)

A new study says rising ocean temperatures linked to global warming could decrease the number of hurricanes making landfall in the Caribbean. The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters , a publication of the American Geophysical Union, challenges recent research that suggests global warming could be contributing to an increase in the frequency and the intensity of Atlantic hurricanes. It reaffirmed earlier views that warmer sea waters might result in atmospheric instabilities that could prevent tropical storms from forming. The new study suggests that warmer seas, caused by greenhouse gases blamed for a rise in global temperatures, are linked to an increase in vertical wind shear, a difference in wind speeds at differen that can tear apart nascent cyclones. read more

Jesse Kharbanda, executive director of the Hoosier Environmental Council, said after Thursday’s vote that the bill had been “a golden opportunity” for Indiana to send a signal to out-of-state investors that the state was eager to attract renewable energy businesses. During a hearing last week before Crooks’ committee, Ed Simcox, the president of the Indiana Energy Association, said Crooks’ bill was too ambitious for Indiana and that it would have cost the state’s utilities $5 billion to achieve the 10 percent renewable energy goal by 2018. read more
