(Hybrid Cars) Hybrid car sales more than triple - Jerusalem Post

A total of 1,731 hybrid cars were sold in 2007, up from 493 in 2006, the Environmental Protection Ministry said Wednesday. A further sign that sales are beginning to take off is that 506 hybrids were bought in the first two months of this year alone, bringing the total number of hybrids on the road to 2,870. The vehicles’ potential has been so high that Environmental Protection Minister Gideon Ezra has approached Honda and Toyota, the manufacturers, asking them to increase the number of cars imported into Israel. According to the ministry’s estimates, the nearly 3,000 hybrid cars on the road save 3,800 tons of CO2 emissions a year, about 1,500 kilograms of nitrogen oxide, 1,400 kg. read more

Schools under 'i-recycle' fill up first container - Marianas Variety

If there's any sign that Guam is getting on the bandwagon with recycling, a container carrying bales of aluminum cans from several of the island's private and public schools was a sure sign. During a news conference yesterday, Guam Business Partners for Recycling (GBPR), under the i-recycle program, placed the last of several bales into a 20-foot container at the Ambros offices in Anigua. There are now a total of 11 private schools and 27 public schools participating, as well as the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Said Denney, "That's the part of the purpose of the program, to promote recycling and benefit the schools. When the baled aluminum arrives at the West Coast, it will be purchased by Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corporation, the largest aluminum recycler in the world, at the current market price. GBPR's plan is to utilize private and public schools as sites for the aluminum can bins, giving access for the entire community to recycle all over the island. read more

Hybrid Cars - Plug-In Car is Latest Milestone In Google's Quest to Not Be Evil - SF Weekly Blogs

Events | Street Team | Join the Street Team | On Sale! Google’s latest do-gooder project is called RechargeIT and aims to cut CO2 emissions by putting plug-in rechargeable hybrid cars on the streets. Nor does it compare the total carbon footprint over time of a newly-manufactured plug-in electric hybrid to, say, converting an existing automobile or improving public transportation. How long is it going to take for Google to get sick of us slapping away their handouts before they’re like ‘Fuck It’ and pull the sheet off the big, primary colored laser cannon that zaps all us ungrateful naysayers back to kingdom come? Until then, it won’t appear on the entry. About Us | Work for SF Weekly | Esubscribe | Privacy Policy | Problem With the Site? read more

Nassau supermarkets urged to recycle plastic bags - Newsday

Nassau County is finally trying to get a grip on those plastic shopping bags that end up adorning parking meters, trees, fences and other public structures. Legislation to be introduced this week would require many supermarkets and retailers in Nassau to collect and recycle plastic bags, which are not biodegradable, and would encourage shoppers to switch to reusable sacks. A spokesman for Stop & Shop, which has 17 supermarkets in Nassau County, said the chain already has recycling bins for plastic bags in all their Long Island stores. A draft of the Nassau County bill says it would apply to stores with more than 5,000 square feet of retail or wholesale space, or which are part of a chain of stores. Stores that continued to use plastic bags would have to provide bins for used plastic bags and recycle the plastic it collects, the draft said. Suffolk, and the Nassau proposal, require the recycling bin be “at” the store, while New York City requires the bins be “in” the stores, Horsley noted. read more
