The maker says it expects to sell 200,000 of the entry level hybrid cars a year, although we don’t know if they will be available in Australia. Save Gas and Stop Global Warming

Global Warming . . . the Evidence is Overwhelming and Undeniable

at-the-pump.jpgHumanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we could have as little as ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

Shanks chief says it will recycle more rubbish as landfill costs rise - guardian.co.uk

Britain is one of the biggest users of landfill sites in Europe but taxes have made it more expensive to bury waste while a European Union directive has reduced the amount of waste that councils can send to landfill sites. The landfill tax on waste rose to £24 a tonne last month and is set to increase to £48 by 2010, raising demand for environmentally friendly waste disposal, such as recycling. Shanks is also keen to increase the use of a natural waste treatment process, known as anaerobic digestion, in which micro-organisms digest organic waste to produce methane, which can be used as fuel to generate electricity. However, Michael Warhurst, senior waste and resources campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said waste management companies had little incentive to increase recycling while still making big profits from landfill sites. read more

Kenya: Rural Areas Investing in Renewable Energy - AllAfrica.com

The money is part of the body’s renewable energy programme which aims to provide 1,000 villages in the country with power derived from solar, hydro, biomass and geothermal sources. The community energy centres have combined both hydro and solar energy sources, making them hybrid centres with zero carbon emission. The energy produced from is combined at an energy centre where the community can use the power in businesses and cottage industries. The increased power generation by the rural projects is also expected to bring down the high cost of energy, which reduces Kenya’s competitiveness in COMESA and other international markets. AllAfrica aggregates and indexes content from over 125 African news organizations , plus more than 200 other sources , who are responsible for their own reporting and views. read more

Hybrid Cars - Gregoire, Rossi battle for eco-credentials - Seattle Post Intelligencer

Campaigning out of a hybrid SUV that gets about 27 miles per gallon, Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi says that when it comes to the environment, he’s more progressive than many voters might think. Rossi’s agenda calls for converting the state motor pool to hybrid and plug-in vehicles by 2015, providing a sales tax exemption on hybrid vehicles, replacing fish-killing road culverts and implementing massive congestion relief projects that he says will eliminate millions of tons of carbon emissions produced by cars stuck in traffic. Rossi can purchase a hybrid in an election year, but that token action doesn’t measure up to Governor Gregoire’s track record of fighting global warming and protecting the environment,” said Aaron Toso, spokesman for Gregoire’s campaign. Kelly Steele, a spokesman for the state Democrats, said Rossi’s gubernatorial candidacy was created “from the ground up” by the Building Industry Association of Washington — which has made opposition to Gregoire’s climate change legislation among their top priorities. Rossi said fighting congestion — one of his top campaign promises — could also help reduce carbon emissions. read more

Eco-friendly claims for ‘hybrid’ cars dismissed as gimmickry - Times Online- Hybrid Cars

Nevertheless, the testers were impressed by the technological innovations introduced to cut CO2 and said five cars tested could be considered “green” despite fuel consumption – and, consequently, emissions – failing to live up to official figures. A spokesman admitted that cars may emit more CO2 under real world operating conditions but insisted that all cars had the same “industry standard” tests. But will any of those greenie tree hugging bludgers get stuck into those Car companies for promoting enviromentaly safe cars when the enviromently safe cars they promote are, well not enviromenlty safe? The carbon costs of producing and decommissioning a car are account for only 10-15% of the total carbon emissions of a car. If car manufacturers tried to seriously reduce emissions from all their cars, instead of producing one-off greenwash vehicles, we might make some headway. read more

Rudd urged to dump renewable energy targets - The Australian

KEVIN Rudd is being urged today to dump mandatory renewable energy targets in Australia if an emissions trading scheme is introduced. The Productivity Commission has warned that demands Australia use more renewable energy - including solar, water and wind - will distort the operation of an emissions trading scheme that simultaneously encourages a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In a submission to the Garnaut Climate Change Review, released today, it also warns that excluding some forms of energy – such as petrol – from any emissions scheme will make it much harder to meet the targets for reductions. In particular, the Commission concludes that continuation of the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target would not achieve any additional emission reduction benefit, but would increase abatement costs for the Australian community. For example, while there may be low-cost ways of reducing emissions in a sector, total abatement costs may be high because of high costs of measuring and verifying emissions. Michael Bodey and Angus Hohenboken AUSTRALIA’S national screen and broadcast school - the Australian Film Television and Radio School - last night launched its third life . read more
