Recycle - Used cell phones ring new life in recycling - Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

In fact, Centennial Wireless, a Fort Wayne company that has spread to other parts of the country, is planning to go green and kick off a recycling campaign soon that will include TV spots and other advertising urging people to recycle their phones. The Allen County Waste Management District does not keep track of how many cell phones are recycled but does give residents options on its Web site as to where to recycle them. OmniSource and Foam Recycling of Fort Wayne, both of which can be found on the waste management agency’s site, report low numbers of old cell phones. At the beginning of the year, the agency kicked off a campaign encouraging Americans to either recycle or donate their cell phones, partnering with many of the country’s cell phone manufacturers and providers. Eshelman said many of his phones started trickling in about five years ago as phones switched from analog to digital, about the same time every man, woman and child seemed to get a cell phone, he said. read more

Energy tax showdown looms - Houston Chronicle(Renewable Energy)

The Democratic-led House on Friday approved a $60 billion tax package designed to spur investment in renewable energy, while also funding popular existing tax breaks — including one letting Texans itemize state and local sales taxes on their federal income tax forms. Despite previous opposition to measures that singled out the oil industry for higher taxes, the administration supported the Senate bill because it was part of a larger package that would help millions of Americans avoid the hugely unpopular and often-expensive alternative minimum tax. With lawmakers trying — for now unsuccessfully — to leave town ahead of the November elections, the House voted 257-166 to create $15 billion in new tax incentives for investments in renewable energy, capture of carbon emissions, energy efficiency and conservation. Earlier in the week, the Democratic-controlled Senate overwhelmingly approved its own renewable energy tax plan, rolled into a broader package that included hurricane relief and the changes in the alternative minimum tax. read more

Schwarzenegger to convene global climate summit - The Associated Press- Global Warming News

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks on the state's plan to transition to a clean energy economy at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on Friday, Sept. Governor Schwarzenegger appears on the second anniversary of his signing of the Global Warming Solutions Act. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican who has challenged many members of his party to take climate change seriously, said Friday that he plans to invite lawmakers and governmental executives from around the globe to California this fall to address solutions to the problem. Schwarzenegger has been at odds with the Bush administration over environmental policy, criticizing what he calls a failure of leadership on global warming and other matters. California and other states sued the federal government after the administration denied their attempt to impose stringent vehicle emission standards to improve air quality. His address to the Commonwealth Club came the day before the second anniversary of his signing of California’s global warming law, which requires the state to cut its emissions by roughly one-third by 2020. read more

Sarah Palin and Global Warming: Alaska Prof. Says Palin … - Democracy Now- Global Warming News

Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. Well, Rick Steiner is with us now. Immediately after that, Governor Palin, then-Governor Palin—this is in December of â06 or January of â07—called him and opposed the listing, before they had ever looked at the science. And then they had a caveat about that, saying they thought that was a conservative estimate and that it would probably happen faster than that. And so, I simply wanted that. read more
