Recycle - Recycling must be included in the carbon reduction scheme - The Age

Given the significant role that recycling plays in reducing our greenhouse emissions, one has to ask why recycling has not been included in the Federal Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. As an emissions reduction activity, recycling can play a significant role in stabilising and reducing Australia’s emissions. The green paper rightly flagged landfill waste as a sector that should be covered under the scheme, but recycling was conspicuously absent. Federal policies that promote recycling and waste reduction activities will result in real and measurable reductions in Australia’s greenhouse emissions. read more

Recycle Old Magazines Into an End Table - Lifehacker Australia

Weblog Apartment Therapy Re-Nest shows how to repurpose a pile of old magazines or vintage books into a small table in just about 10 minutes. As the post points out, the concept is very similar to cardboard furniture, like previously mentioned Blox , counting on folds and layers for strength. I find that Capital One (bank) is always willing to provide envelopes and postage, enabling me to dispose of the junk mail remnants that remain after shredding anything containing personal information. Step 2 - stuff the remaining junk mail into the business reply envelopes of OTHER junk mail senders. read more

Credit crunch inhibits giving, so recycle - Daily Post

The campaign calls on consumers and charities to use recycling – of, for example, phones and ink cartridges – to make up for the shortfall in Welsh cash donations. However 84% of respondents in Wales who do not recycle them said that they would do so if it would help a charity, higher than the UK average, highlight-ing a problem of awareness rather than generosity. Three R's go green, starting with recycle - San Francisco Chronicle

These days, recycle, reduce and reuse is the new mantra in schools as educators, politicians and parents push for increased environmental education and ecological awareness in California classrooms. Just two or three decades ago, environmental instruction in California typically consisted of a week away at Outdoor Education during fifth or sixth grade, which in Northern California included the chance to lick a banana slug and identify huge swaths of poison oak. Classroom instruction often combines science, environmental awareness and a sense of personal responsibility - a kind of green civics - but in 2010, California will offer a free environmental education curriculum. The tour gave the participants ideas about how to bring the Northern California watershed into classrooms, giving students an understanding of how the snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada and the sewage plants in Santa Clara affect the bay - including the two bat rays the teachers saw in the shallows. Teaching environmental education requires understanding the cultural background of students, many of whom have no experience interacting with nature and little exposure to environmental stewardship, said Lucy Schmidt, one of the canoe trippers and a teacher at Oakland’s World Academy, a charter school in the Fruitvale neighborhood. read more

Wastebasket blues: Houston doesn't recycle enough garbage … - Houston Chronicle

Less service, higher cost,” was the damning refrain last year when City Council considered imposing a garbage collection fee. Yet Houston might be alone in wholly depending on its general fund — which pays for fire and police protection — to bear the cost of garbage pickup. A spokesman for Mayor Bill White’s office said the percentage of garbage recycled in Houston will go up this October, when wood-and-lawn clipping recycling could boost recycling rates to 20 percent. But if “Houston culture” truly cannot muster the civic responsibility for its trash that every other city accepts, it’s up to city leaders to find alternatives. Houston, where some neighborhoods recycle only 2 percent of their trash, doesn’t have the cash in its general fund for diesel trucks and personnel to trawl block after block where the recycle bins are empty. read more

Maryland Highway Workers Recycle Deer Carcasses - FOXNews

Recycling biodegradable material to improve the land along state highways is environmentally friendly and it saves money previously spent on digging graves and buying compost, said Jim Jones, SHA chief facility maintenance officer. SHA got the idea to compost the deer from West Virginia, where compost is made from hog carcasses, he said. In 2001, the Maryland State Highway Administration opened a facility in Carroll County for collecting deer and allowing them to decompose. In 2007, workers picked up 1,056 deer carcasses in Frederick County and 576 deer in Carroll County. At these facilities, highway workers drop deer carcasses into bins filled with sawdust and a mixture of horse manure and wood chips. read more
