Cabarrus County will get 22 new Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles this year as part of a growing regional trend to turn to more environmentally friendly vehicles. The 22 cars, to be used by the Department of Social Services, were approved by the county commissioners Monday night and will cost the county $534,000. Each car is expected to travel 8,000 to 10,000 miles a year, and Bilafer said the savings for the county would be significant. Mecklenburg County has at least 20 hybrids in its fleet, and Gaston County has at least seven. Iredell County does not have any hybrid cars, but Mooresville has added five in the past three years. Bilafer said he expects the county to keep its new hybrids for at least seven to 10 years, and he’ll get a chance to see a Camry up close for himself soon. read more

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked 10 hybrid vehicles . The Honda Civic Hybrid is next, racking up 40 mpg (64 km) for city driving and the same as the Prius on the freeway. The hydrogen-fueled Chevy Equinox, test driven for a Scientific American article , received a 5 out of 10 on the EPA’s greenhouse gas scale (and got 17 to 24 miles, or 27 to 39 kilometers per gallon). With hybrid cars, which operate off of electrical and gasoline sources, the largest concern for firefighter and passenger safety is disconnecting the power from the vehicle. He explained to the firefighters and other safety personnel in attendance how the hybrid works, where and how to disconnect the power, how to remove the top of a vehicle if necessary and what to do if the vehicle is in water. He also cautioned that even though someone might not be able to hear the engine of a hybrid vehicle when approaching it, it may still be on because the gas engine doesn’t run when the vehicle is stopped unless it’s working to charge the battery. Beckel assured the firefighters Toyota as a manufacturer had safety of its passengers and anyone else dealing with the vehicle as a top priority when designing it, citing the deactivation of air bags after power is disconnected from the vehicle for 90 seconds and engineering of the front of that car that causes the energy from a front impact to be transferred out of either side of it, rather than straight back into it where passengers are seated.
