As the UK braces itself for Christmas in the wake of the credit crunch, more than 18 million (39 per cent) UK adults intend to recycle old presents, like unwanted CDs and toiletries, given to them in previous years. In fact, the average amount spent by Britons on Christmas presents is set to reduce by £83 (22 per cent), from £384 last year to £301 this year. The Welsh are the most likely to recycle Christmas presents this year (48 per cent), compared to those living in the South East (33 per cent) and East of England (35 per cent). The Welsh are also the most likely to finance Christmas by trying to get a pay rise or by doing overtime (20 per cent), in comparison to just 7 per cent of those people in the South West of England. In comparison, Londoners and those living in the South East are the most likely to put their purchases on their credit card (both 20 per cent), compared to 12 per cent in Wales and 14 per cent in the West Midlands. Nearly half of all women (46 per cent) are much more likely to recycle old Christmas presents than men (32 per cent) and are also more likely to fund the season by reducing their spending on other things (27 per cent), compared to men (18 per cent). read more

Click here BILLERICA, Nov 10, 2008 (The Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) — CVA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating — As Billerica looks to slash its trash budget, a debate is brewing over how aggressive the town should be in encouraging its residents to recycle. While Alkhatib said he plans to revisit the $200 fee, he also has made it clear to selectmen that the only way to increase the town’s recycling rate is to implement what he calls an “aggressive” plan. Billerica produced 17,730 tons of trash last fiscal year, more than any other community in Greater Lowell except Lowell, which produced 40,000. The amount of trash produced by Billerica residents has decreased by 2,500 tons since a the program was instituted, saving the town $177,500 in disposal fees. Although the consortium initially decided to choose Haverhill-based COVANTA as its new trash-disposal company, Wheelabrator has agreed to lower its price to $67 per ton for the last year of the contract for Billerica, which could save the town $100,000 for fiscal year 2010. read more

The plastic components will be used to make park benches and the wood will be used in projects by Keep Brevard Beautiful. That’s according to Mike Hazlett, a member of the group and president of a local recycling company, who came up with the idea. By Thursday, American Recycled Plastic had received about 1,000 signs, and calls from groups wanting to bring in more. The county’s Solid Waste Management division has also contacted campaigns about the recycling effort. Find Suncoast recipes from local chefs as seen on ABC 7. read more

THE council is considering extending its compulsory recycling scheme to include those who live in flats, following complaints from residents. Under the controversial scheme, launched last year, residents have to put recyclable items in the provided black boxes or they risk being fined. In recent months the council has hardened its stance and has sent out more than 3,000 letters to people suspected of not recycling, threatening to fine them £100. Ms McDonald has asked for a recycling box but has been told she cannot have one, she even offered to take her black box out into the street but was told it would not help. The council is required to meet a target of 33 per cent of its waste recycled by March and 50 per cent by 2012, or face heavy fines. read more

Alberta is the first province to have a milk container recycling, refund system in the country. Starting in June 2009, containers under a liter will come with a 10 cent deposit, while containers over a liter will be 25 cents. Chris Bourdeau with Alberta Environment says the province is hoping these rates will encourage consumers to recycle and get their money back. The Dairy Farmers of Alberta are not happy with the program, saying any increase in the cost of milk will hurt their business. A few to note are pop cans which are now worth 10 cents and anything over a liter will now be worth 25 cents, up from 20 cents. read more
