The funding for each selected school includes up to $10,000 from ICECF to pay for the cost of the system and $2,000 from ComEd to fund Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) support to install the PV system and to develop a renewable energy classroom curriculum. ComEd also will provide participating teachers attending a Solar School Workshop, a grade-level appropriate Schools Going Solar instruction kit and additional teaching materials created by the National Energy Education Development Project. ComEd has been a strong supporter of environmental causes and its commitments to a greener environment include a $225 million endowment in 1999 to create the ICECF as an independent foundation and more than $100 million to the City of Chicago to support energy efficiency and renewable technology. The solar PV program, now in its sixth year, began as the ComEd Solar Schools initiative and was created to raise student awareness of renewable energy resources and to demonstrate the benefits of solar power. read more

Hey, thanks for this bit of news. Anything the big corporations can do to help boost renewable energy in this country is long overdue. I’m sure you know about the energy bill that is waiting to be passed in Congress?
I’m working with a coalition to make sure that the Senate’s fuel economy standards don’t get bumped lower than 35 mpg. I’d like to invite you to sign the petition to make sure this doesn’t happen at http://www.energybill2007.org .
